Laos Currency
The Kip is the official currency of Laos. The bank notes are presently in
denominations of 1 Kip, 10 Kips, 20 Kips, 50 Kips, 100 Kips and 500 Kips and
1,000 Kips.
All major currencies such as the US Dollar, French Franc, DM, Yen, Baht and
others can be exchanged at banks that are located in all major towns. In Luang
Prabang and Vientiane competitive rates are offered by numerous authorized
private exchange bureaus. One exchange facility is available at Wattay Airport
in Vientiane.
Cash
Cash remains the most realistic way to take money into the region. The key
currency is US dollars, but ensure that you take new edition currency as old
edition $50 and $100 bills are often not accepted. Do not order local currency
from your home country. All major airports have banks, and all banks accept US
dollars.
Travellers cheques
Limited acceptance. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are
advised to take travellers cheques in US Dollars or Thai Bahts.

Credit cards
Credit cards are widely accepted in Thailand, but beware that smaller
enterprises will surcharge if you use a credit card. Consider paying a sum into
your credit card account to give you a positive balance that you can draw on
overseas. Credit cards are accepted in major hotels in other countries.
ATM Machines
ATM Machines are available just about everywhere in Thailand and nearly all are
part of worldwide networks. ATM machines are not generally available in other
countries.
