Laos Currency

The Kip is the official currency of Laos. The bank notes are presently in denominations of 1 Kip, 10 Kips, 20 Kips, 50 Kips, 100 Kips and 500 Kips and 1,000 Kips.

All major currencies such as the US Dollar, French Franc, DM, Yen, Baht and others can be exchanged at banks that are located in all major towns. In Luang Prabang and Vientiane competitive rates are offered by numerous authorized private exchange bureaus. One exchange facility is available at Wattay Airport in Vientiane.

Cash
Cash remains the most realistic way to take money into the region. The key currency is US dollars, but ensure that you take new edition currency as old edition $50 and $100 bills are often not accepted. Do not order local currency from your home country. All major airports have banks, and all banks accept US dollars.

Travellers cheques
Limited acceptance. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take travellers cheques in US Dollars or Thai Bahts.
